Meghalaya, a mountainous plateau in eastern India, covers an area of only 22,429 sq km. It was originally part of Assam, but on January 21, 1972, the districts of Khasi, Garo and Jaintia mountains became part of this beautiful northeastern state. The literacy percentage in this state is .84.8484 and the languages are mostly English, Khasi and Garo.
It is mainly an agricultural economy. The services sector includes real estate and insurance companies. Meghalaya's total state domestic production for 2004 is estimated at $ 1.6 billion at current prices.
